Arena Steward

Being chosen to be an arena steward is undoubtedly one of the best jobs at the Festival. You get free entrance to the Festival and you get a front row vantage point for all the shows and on top of that you get paid.

Required Qualifications:

  • No previous experience is required.

Important personal qualities

  • Outgoing and enthusiastic manner. Able to work with people or independently.
  • An ability to speak with an old English dialect.
  • Applicants with prior experience in the theatre or who have an interest in amateur dramatics will be given priority. Any previous knowledge of medieval history such as having studied related subjects in school would also be considered an asset.
  • An ability to be both tactful and forceful with members of the public.
  • A second language would help with our foreign visitors.

Job Description:

  • Stewards will be supervised by the chief steward.
  • Stewards must be available for work from 9:00am until 6:00pm on each Festival day.
  • All stewards must be in costume at all times and wear the Knights of Herstmonceux yellow and blue tabards at all times so that the public can identify them as being in authority.
  • Stewards will be required to stand for long periods of time around the various display rings in order to ensure that members of the public do not encroach on the display lines or stand in any unauthorized areas during a show and thereby placing themselves at risk.
  • Stewards will be given breaks at the discretion of the chief steward. These breaks will be at irregular times and never when the main arena events such as the siege and the jousting is on.
  • Stewards may also be required to give some basic directions so a thorough knowledge of the Festival site and the programme is essential.

Pay

  • £50 per day.
  • Lunch will be provided.
